seeing red

If you follow me on instagram, you already know that I scored these amazing bamboo chairs for a steal a few weeks ago.

I had been looking on Craigslist off and on for about a month and couldn't find anything I liked for a decent price. And then I stumbled upon these bad boys. An hour drive [via my latin lover since I was on call] and $60 later, I had four chairs and table that I was in love with. The post had actually asked for only $40 but since I knew I couldn't walk away from these [and since I couldn't just drop by and grab them short notice and was afraid someone else would] I offered more.

It's the first time I've ever felt the need to do so and I don't regret it. I knew I would endlessly kick myself in the behind if I lost these beauties. I'm pretty sure the girl was a bit freaked out by me since I emailed her twice and sounded a bit nutty. I find sometimes a little enthusiasm goes a long way. I know it's swayed me as a seller in the past. Also note that when you text me in ganger speak, I will not answer you.

I just can't get over their amazing shape. I'm not sure if I will even keep the table [it only seats four] or what I'll do with it so excluding that, it was $15 a chair which I think is pretty phenomenal. They came with cushions you'll see in a minute but I wasn't digging them.

From the moment I got them home I couldn't decide whether I wanted to paint them or not. I kept them inside for a week or two. Staring at them. Imagining them painted. Wondering if I would regret it. I consulted you on instagram and was swayed to leave them be.

For awhile.

And then the spray paint bug bit me. A full morning of looking at pinterest images for 'painted bamboo' and I was sold. Here's just a few of the goodies I saw around:

Hubba. Hubba. I was sold. So I picked up some cherry red spray paint by Rustoleum, for indoors and outdoors. And I went to town. Here's the before and afters:

You can see here how the bottom was much brighter and how the other areas are weathered. The arms flaked a bit when I wiped them down so I'm sure they will do so after they're painted and I'll just have to touch up every season.

I started on the bottom first so I could flip them over and not worry about the finish. Here she be:

I'm so in love. I feel like all the details and the lines I fell in love with are only accentuated with the color. Before senorita chair was all "don't mind me. I'll just be demure over here by myself." And now she's all like "I'm so hot, I ain't got time for you." Not that my chair is snobby. She just knows  what she wants.

Seriously though... I can't stop staring.

Now I just need cushions ... and a table. So far, the cushion thing has been a lot harder than one would've guessed. Square ones must be all the rage now because that's all I'm finding. It's proving hard to find the right size/shape, price, and color/pattern. I could pay someone to reupholster them but that sounds pricey. We shall see! Right now this is the original... it obviously won't work:

And on a totally random note. We've had our annual battle-de-dandelion and I won. Mostly. There's some stragglers out there but they won't last long. I won... with this:

If you've ever had to really fight these suckers then you know what a pain it can be. Usually there's pumping and then spraying involved which doesn't sound bad but if you have a decent sized lawn, your arms will be screaming. This guy is battery operated. I could kiss whoever made this. Or sell my first and second born. And they could totally sell this for $50 a gallon because I would still jump on board. I think it cost between $12 and $15 and I ended up buying two for our lawn. The majority are dead or dying and my arms have since been constantly trying to hug me. No seriously. Get off arms, it's embarrassing.

  1. Love these! Red is my all time favorite decorating color. You did these chairs right! Cushions that size shouldn't be too pricy and honestly you already have a template. If you omit the welting, you could probably make them yourself! Good luck!

    1. It's the shape that's hard to find. Right now Kmart [only online] has some I'm eyeing- I'm no seamstress.

    1. I was thinking of black and white striped ones! And have even found some on Kmart.com. I'm a little afraid it would be too circus-y but there should be a lot of other colors going on...
