our bottoms are painted

That's right. We are one step closer to a kitchen makeover. With this last week off we've managed to cross some things off our list. Here's where we are on one wall of our kitchen:

"painted kitchen cabinets"

We still need to paint the bottom cabinets on the other wall [they're prepped and ready to go] as well as the toekick. I held off as I'm feeling a bit indecisive. I would love something fun like gold, yellow, or stripes/pattern. But selling the house is creeping up on our list of things we want to do in 2014. So now I'm debating between black and white. Either one I picture as being a hair magnet.

We are still so in love with the changes. It's so much brighter and cheery. We get a lot of light in the dining room but there was something about the other end of the kitchen that just seemed to soak it up. Remember on this wall, this is what we started with:

during our first tour of the house- code for 'not my crap'

"before and after kitchen cabinets"

Before, it was just soooo much orange between the flooring and the cabinets. Now there's contrast and my eyes don't bleed so much.

I can't wait to get it restyled for Christmas and clean the look up a bit. I've gotten slack about it all since we've been working on the cabinets.

In other kitchen/dining room news, we have new to us chairs. No one likes them but us and we're ok with that.

I had to convince Oscar that they were forever chairs. We found them at a thrift store for $100 for four. Maybe it's a bit much but we plan on selling our previous ones and they were in perfect condition. They still smell like the thrift store a bit every now and then and I kind of like it. Weird, I know. Now if someone would just trade me tables [one that preferably doesn't show grime and hair minutes after cleaning]. We have captain chairs at the ends and I squint and pretend they are white eames shell chairs. You can see it too, right?

I know I haven't been posting as much. I've been juggling a lot lately and I want to thank you for hanging in there! So what's your opinion on the toe kick? White, black, or something else?

    1. I know we keep saying that. And 'why didn't we do this sooner?!'

  3. What a major transformation! I love the open cabinets in white. I would do something fun for the toe kick. A pop of color would be so much fun. And when you go to sell, it would be a quick thing to change before you list it. I say GO FOR IT!

    1. Ha I love it but we're looking to sell in the spring so it would be really short lived and not quite worth the effort. I can dream though!

  4. I would paint the toe kicks black and change the countertops to something more neutral. You can pain them also....maybe black. That way the counters and the toe kicks tie in to each other. the more neutral your home the quicker the sale!!!! Good luck!!

    1. I know! Our realtor thinks we should leave the counters as is since they're in good shape. I'd love butcherblock or stone but it's just not in the budget. Hoping someone can look past green laminate :x

  5. The cabinets look soooo good! And really, $100 for four chairs? I'd say that's a steal! I just purchased chairs for our eating area last night and would really have preferred your pricing to mine!

Okay, toe-kick. I'd go white. And then if you want something fun throw up some washi tape that is easily removed before you sell this spring. The best of both worlds!

  10. I love your chairs, too! And the cabinets...wow--such a big difference! The white makes the counter tops look a lot nicer/more updated, too, I think.

    1. Thanks Gretchen! That makes me feel better since we can't replace them. I despise them but the white cabinets make them easier to swallow ;)
